Design principles and process methods for temporary bridge supports

January 8, 2026

Temporary supports are made by adding sand to two interlocking iron boxes, filled with sand to support them. After the continuous section is poured in place, the sand inside is released and the supports can be removed.

Generally, bridges have specialized temporary support design drawings, which include the elevation and location of temporary supports, and sometimes the construction of steel reinforcement embedded parts. When erecting beams and slabs, temporary supports should be set up. Measure and layout the center position according to the elevation and coordinates on the design drawings, and then place temporary supports.

A temporary project in bridge construction. Although it is a temporary project, it is still a very important and indispensable part.

In the installation of prefabricated box girders and T-beams, depending on the design concept, sometimes a process needs to be adopted. The process method is as follows: first, temporary supports are set up at the top of the pier, and then prefabricated box girders and T-beams are erected on the temporary supports. After completing the wet joint, wet hinge joint, negative bending moment tensioning, and grouting processes, remove the temporary supports and complete the system conversion. In the past, temporary supports were made of bricks and wood. Currently, there are generally two methods used: 1. Sulfur mortar temporary supports, in which electric heating wires are pre placed inside the sulfur mortar, and the temporary supports are removed by melting the sulfur mortar with electric heat to complete the system conversion.

2. Temporary supports for sand cylinders and sand boxes are made by selecting steel pipes with appropriate diameters through calculation. The bottom of the sand cylinder is welded with steel plates for sealing, and a screw hole is left on the side and blocked with screws. An appropriate amount of fine sand is loaded into the cylinder, and a piston slightly smaller than the diameter of the sand cylinder is placed on top of the fine sand. The piston can be made of concrete, wood, steel plate sealed steel pipes, etc., so that the top surface of the piston is 3-5CM higher than the sand cylinder. By loosening the bottom screw to release the fine sand in the bucket, the purpose of removing the temporary support is achieved, and the beam slab system conversion is completed. Note: Choose the construction method based on the design concept, with a double support design, and place the beam and slab on the permanent support at once. For single support design, it is necessary to first place the beam and slab on temporary supports or supports. Design principle of temporary support

Sulfur mortar support is a common type of temporary support, which was used in the original design of the Huangshuihe Extra Large Bridge on the Yiku Expressway. It is designed based on the principle of melting sulfur mortar through electric heating, causing the large beam placed on the temporary support to gradually fall onto the support.

In bridge construction, due to the requirements of construction technology and procedures, temporary supports are sometimes set up to place the main beam during the installation of the main beam. After the wet joints and stress tension of the connection are completed, special methods are used to place the main beam on the fixed supports, so as to complete the installation of the main beam.
