Introduction to commonly used paints for bridge anti-corrosion coatings

January 4, 2026

Bridges are exposed to wind, rain, humidity, and pollution for extended periods in natural environments, necessitating high levels of corrosion protection. High-performance anti-corrosion coatings and supporting components are required; a suitable set of components is crucial and directly impacts the protection of the steel structure.

Coating Solutions:

Bridge Steel Structure Coating Solution:

Epoxy Zinc-Rich Primer + Epoxy Mica Iron Oxide Intermediate Paint + Fluorocarbon Topcoat/Polysiloxane Topcoat

Inorganic Zinc-Rich Primer + ED1500 Epoxy Sealing Primer + Epoxy Mica Iron Oxide Intermediate Paint + Fluorocarbon Paint

Railway Bridge Coating Solution:

Epoxy Zinc-Rich Primer + Epoxy Mica Iron Oxide Intermediate Paint + Gray Aluminum Powder Graphite Alkyd Topcoat

Epoxy Zinc-Rich Primer: Commonly used in bridges. Due to the electrochemical reaction characteristics of the zinc powder it contains, it needs to be in full contact with the steel substrate to achieve its anti-corrosion effect. However, epoxy zinc-rich primer is composed of epoxy resin and fillers such as zinc powder. A drawback of epoxy resin is its poor weather resistance, requiring a suitable matching solution for optimal protection and a longer service life.

Inorganic Zinc-Rich Primer: Inorganic zinc-rich primer is an inorganic coating, with ethyl silicate, zinc powder, solvents, and additives as its main components. It has cathodic protection characteristics and electrochemical anti-corrosion protection, and is used for anti-corrosion coating of steel structures, bridges, buildings, factories, etc.

Epoxy Miclostrobin Intermediate Paint: Primarily used in steel structure engineering coatings as an intermediate paint, it improves the adhesion between the topcoat and primer, increases film thickness, enhances anti-corrosion effect, and strengthens barrier properties. It can be applied to anti-corrosion of various types of steel in buildings, bridges, pipelines, machinery, equipment, factories, etc.

Fluorocarbon topcoat: A high-end outdoor coating, featuring excellent weather resistance, UV resistance, aging resistance, self-cleaning properties, superior corrosion resistance, a full film, excellent decorative effect, and a corrosion protection lifespan of over 15 years.

Polysiloxane topcoat: Also a high-end outdoor coating, similar to fluorocarbon paint, featuring high solids content, low VOCs, extremely low air pollution, excellent weather resistance, UV resistance, aging resistance, superior corrosion resistance, a full film, excellent decorative effect, and a corrosion protection lifespan of over 20 years. Polysiloxane topcoat is a commonly used high-end topcoat in heavy-duty corrosion protection applications such as outdoor steel structures, bridges, and building stadiums.

Gray aluminum powder graphite alkyd topcoat: This paint is used for railway steel structure bridges. It is inexpensive, easy to apply, weather-resistant, acid rain-resistant, and easy to reapply.
